How long does it take for an initial application to be decided?

Initial applications for SSDI benefits will be decided upon by a “Disability Determination Service.” This is an agency managed by the state you live in, working on behalf of the Social Security Administration. Typically, they will make an initial decision about your claim within 3 to 6 months. In 2022, approximately 62% of all SSDI initial applications across the United States were rejected.
