After recent announcements that computer hackers had stolen more than 21 million Social Security numbers, you may be concerned about the security of your own Social Security number. This comes on top of other large scale security breaches recently that include the theft of personal information from federal employees, Target, Macy’s, and Neiman Marcus. So if you are concerned about what you can do to make sure your Social Security number stays safe, make sure to keep the following in mind.

Identify theft can affect your Social Security Disability Application. If an identity thief has been filing tax returns under your name, these earnings could impact your eligibility for Social Security Disability Benefits, as the Social Security Administration will consider your recent work history when determining if you are able to work. You should contact the Internal Revenue Service as soon as possible to correct any fraudulent tax filings in your name.

Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet. You should also avoid storing your Social Security number in computers and take care to shred old documents that contain your financial or personal information.

Keep an eye on your bank accounts to watch for suspicious or unusual activity. You should also check your credit score on a regular basis to see if any new accounts have been opened in your name.

If you’ve been a victim of identity theft, be proactive. It’s important to contact your bank or financial institutions to make sure they are aware of the fraudulent activity. They can also give you a report that will allow you to see which accounts have been affected. You should also file an Identity Theft Report, which is a combination of a report to the Federal Trade Commission and a police report. This will be important when you go to deal with the businesses or credit agencies where new accounts have been opened in your name. You should shut down all of the accounts that your identity thief may have been able to access to prevent them from doing more damage while you get your affairs in order.
